LS Group, speed of securing smart technology with emphasis on ‘safety, environment, and society’

Intensive investment in strengthening safety net… Establishment of a sustainable management system at the group level

LS Group is accelerating the development of smart technology with an emphasis on ‘safety, environment, and society.’ The key is to strengthen technical capabilities to protect the environment and fulfill social responsibilities as well as safety management within the workplace.

LS is steadily practicing sustainable management by launching a group-level ESG committee at the holding company in 2021. The committee plays a role in overseeing the group's ESG management, including establishing ESG direction from the group's perspective, responding to policy changes, and monitoring and supporting ESG implementation by each company. Based on this, LS considers 'safety', 'environment', and 'society' as the basis of group management, and is strongly promoting basic activities at the group level to prevent safety accidents from occurring.

LS Cable & System is accelerating safety management by continuously expanding investment in the ESH (Environment, Safety, Health) field. We operate the Safety Management Division, a company-wide safety headquarters, and are making efforts to further systemize safety management through our own organizations such as the Safety and Health Management Committee. We are also building a safety culture that meets global standards, including applying 'ISO45001', a safety and health management system certification recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), to all business sites.

LS Cable & System is also contributing to strengthening the social safety net through the i-Check diagnosis and monitoring system developed with small and medium-sized partners. iCheck is a system that installs IoT (Internet of Things) sensors on power cables and electrical equipment to detect abnormal conditions such as heat generation and partial discharge in real time to prevent accidents such as power outages and fires due to power system abnormalities. Since last year, the EyeCheck monitoring system has begun to be installed in earnest, mainly in the Yeosu National Industrial Complex, and domestic and foreign companies in the semiconductor, display, petrochemical, and steel industries, which use a lot of power, are also actively considering the introduction of EyeCheck.

LS Electric is strengthening its company-wide safety management system, focusing on the safety environment support sector. In order to establish a global-level ESH system, we are operating a dedicated team centered around the environmental and safety teams at each business site in Cheonan, Cheonan, and Busan. They play the role of safety guards for management of workplace safety facilities, safety inspections, employee training, and health management. In addition, LS Electric is making efforts to create a safe business environment through smart factory core technologies.

In addition, LS Electric has built and is operating a 'smart factory' in Building G of Cheongju Plant 1, which is considered the core of so-called manufacturing innovation, with an automated system installed across all lines, including parts supply, assembly, testing, and packaging. After LS Electric's Cheongju business site was converted into a smart factory, the daily production of 38 low-voltage equipment lines produced at this factory increased from the existing 7,500 units to 20,000 units, energy consumption was reduced by more than 60%, and the defect rate was also reduced by Global Smart. Production efficiency was dramatically improved as it plummeted to the factory level of 6PPM (Parts Per Million).

To achieve the goal of 'zero serious accidents', LS MnM is strengthening its safety and health risk management system and applying management standards that are higher than those required by domestic law. We have announced the ‘Safety and Health Management Policy’ for 2022 and are encouraging the participation of all members. We are continuously strengthening our management system by reorganizing the organization based on the three principles of safety and health: proactive management, ongoing management, and field-oriented management.

Since 2017, Onsan Smelter's smart factory project, 'ODS (Onsan Digital Smelter)', has been promoted and the safety environment has been strengthened through digital transformation. By connecting all production processes in the smelter through communication and automating the process, safety and environmental capabilities as well as production efficiency and stability are advanced, attracting attention from the global smelting and mining industries. ODS is expected to be completed at the end of this year and is expected to play an important role as a future growth engine for LS Group as well as LS MnM. In addition, ODS' digital transformation capabilities and know-how are expected to serve as important infrastructure for the secondary battery material business that the company is pursuing as a future growth business.

LS Mtron has established and is operating ‘Five Company-wide Environmental Safety Rules’ to raise safety awareness among executives and employees. Recently, in accordance with the expanded application of the Severe Accident Punishment Act, risk assessments are being conducted on a regular and frequent basis, and the Severe Accident Committee is managing the evaluation results to ensure substantial improvements. We also produce engines that meet the international exhaust gas regulations EPA Tier 4F and EU Stage V standards.

In March 2024, eco-friendly energy company E1 achieved 40 years of zero accidents, the longest in the private energy industry. Above all, in order to proactively respond to safety risks, E1 is actively carrying out safety-related system construction and reinforcement activities, such as establishing a safety environment portal system to manage safety management status comprehensively and systematically. In addition, to raise the safety awareness of executives and employees, we hold a safety environment accident-free resolution rally and conduct not only internal training such as emergency response training and emergency rescue training, but also joint training with related organizations such as fire departments.
